Ask Maps is picking shops the top three do not own. Here is what to fix.

·Framingham, Natick, Chelmsford, Waltham

Ask Maps is the Gemini assistant inside Google Maps. Google launched it in the US on March 12, 2026. By October 19 it was also on desktop Maps, behind an Ask Maps button. People ask it a job, not a keyword: ‘who can clear a driveway in Westford before work,’ or ‘HVAC in Framingham that can come tonight.’

One firm tested this on October 19 with specific questions in Denver and Austin. Of 110 businesses Ask Maps named, only five sat in the Maps top three for the plain keyword, and many were not in the top 20. Most write-ups quoted reviews, and nearly all of the picks were rated 4.5 or higher. Ask the same question again and the list changes. That is one test, not a Google rule. The useful part is the shape of the question.

Ask it about your own trade

  • On your phone, open Google Maps and tap Ask Maps.
  • Ask the way a customer would, with the town and the job. Example: ‘plumber in Chelmsford who can fix a leaking water heater today.’
  • Read which shops it names and which sentence it uses about each one. Note if it quotes a review, the hours, or a service.
  • Ask the same question once more. If the list moves, you are looking at a shortlist, not a ranking you can buy.

Make the listing answer that question

  • Services on the Google listing should name the work you actually do. ‘Heating’ is weaker than ‘no-heat calls in Natick.’
  • Hours have to match the site and the phone greeting. An assistant cannot invent a Sunday opening.
  • Add a photo from a recent job in that town, not a stock truck.
  • After a finished job, ask every customer the same neutral way for a review. Do not tell them which words to use. The test found Ask Maps quoting what customers already wrote.

Local SEO for Middlesex County still starts with a true listing. Ask Maps is another reader of that listing. If the hours are wrong, both the map pack and the assistant will repeat the mistake.
